FAQ

Why engage a landscape designer?

Sure, you could do it yourself, but a good designer can help you avoid common mistakes, some of which take years to become apparent and are costly to rectify. Experienced designers take your wish-list of ideas, an understanding of the opportunities and limitations of your site, and create something beautiful that serves your needs and doesn’t blow your budget.

When should I contact a designer?

The short answer is “as soon as possible”. Whether you are renovating an existing garden or building a new one, the entire project (house, interior and exterior) will benefit from evolving together. Being able to liaise with building and interior designers enables us all to ensure that everything flows and belongs together.

What services does FTGD offer?

I offer a personalised garden design service that ranges from garden advice meetings through to a full concept design and construction plans. This can then integrate with landscape construction, building design and interior design. I don’t do “cookie cutter” designs; your garden will be bespoke and like no other. For details of all services offered, click HERE.

Does FTGD construct and maintain the gardens you design?

No. My passion is design and I stay in my lane. I can provide a list of construction and maintenance teams for your consideration, or you are welcome to use one of your choosing. I do insist on liaising with contractors during the construction process to ensure my designs are interpreted correctly and installed to a high standard.

Can I see my garden in 3D?

Yes. I use a CAD package called SketchUp, which creates realistic 3D renders of my designs. You are able to see them as static images and dynamic models. There is an additional fee for this as it is outsourced to some very clever people.

What is a Master Concept Plan?

This is the overall blueprint of your entire project site, showing the arrangement and functions of each element, and how they relate to each other. It is crucial for a garden to have a sense of unity, or harmony, especially if it is to be constructed in stages over time. The concept develops iteratively from rough sketches on paper, eventually emerging as clear, hand-drawn or computer plans and, in some cases, 3D renders and models.

How long does the design process take?

Since every project is unique there are a number of variables that can influence the design timeline, namely size, complexity and scope. I only take on a couple of projects at any one time to ensure every client gets personalised service. As a guide, expect twelve to sixteen (12-16) weeks from initial consultation through to construction plan completion (excludes installation). You will be kept advised of project development throughout the process.

What size projects does FTGD work with?

I have designed urban gardens for residential properties ranging from courtyards through to quarter acre blocks. I have also designed broader landscapes for rural properties, incorporating homestead gardens and landscaping for windbreaks, equine facilities and heritage properties. I design every project from scratch, as if it were my own garden. No one-size-fits-all here!

How much does it cost?

My design fees are outlined in the Services section, click HERE to see them. Each project is individual, and your Design Proposal will outline a fixed fee based on the size and complexity of the project, and the services selected. I will be conscious of your stated budget and will work with you to ensure everyone is happy.

A new garden is an investment. There are ways to reduce the cost of installation of your new garden: reduce the proportion or size of hardscape elements (structures, paving, walls etc), use smaller plants, use cheaper materials that give a similar effect. Construction costs are outside my remit, but can be provided by your selected landscaper once you have shown them your plans.
